Written and directed by Osgood Perkins, and adapted from the short story by Stephen King, The Monkey is a fun and enjoyable bloodbath of a horror film. The Monkey isn’t just a horror film. It's also a blood-soaked comedic experience. To summarize, Osgood Perkins nailed it.
Things we liked:
The kills: The kills in this film are insane. They didn't hold back, and there was an abundant amount of gore.
The plot: The plot for this adaptation was great. There are infinite possibilities when it came to re-imagining this short story. All of the kills were thought out, and the characters were good.
The production: The atmosphere was still there, and even though you might think you know what is going to happen next, it still manages to surprise you.
What we thought could have been better:
The depth: We really enjoyed this, but felt like there was a lot more to explore here. It seemed like it was rushing from kill to kill at times.
The story: While the plot was interesting, there were a lot of holes in the story, which tie-in to the depth comment above.
The characters: The characters kind of took away from the atmosphere a bit. A bit too unserious.
Overall:
We really enjoyed The Monkey. It wasn't something taking itself too seriously, which, at times, was almost leaning too much into the silly side vs. serious, but was still an enjoyable experience. If you want to watch a really fun film with a lot of gore and over-the-top kills, this one is for you.
